Lamisil - One Nail Fungus Treatment

There are many products on the market today that are intended to combat toe nail fungus.  Some of these are medically prescribed, some are over-the-counter and some are home remedies.  One of the prescription drugs that a doctor can prescribed is called Lamisil.  It is important, when approaching toe nail fungus, to become an informed consumer.  Know your options and understand the ramifications of each, remedy.

What is Lamisil?

Lamisil comes in two main forms.  The tablet form fights fungus on the toenails and fingernails.  The cream is used for other types of fungal infections such as ringworm, jock itch and others.  Lamisil is a highly effective drug to take for toe nail fungus, but it's not one that works overnight.  The tablets usually don't take effect for several months, and aren't seen until a new nail grows in.  This can be frustrating and discouraging.

Lamisil tablets are prescribed to be taken every day for a number of months.  It is important to continue with the treatment for the full cycle that your doctor has prescribed.  The best way to remember to take your daily pill is to schedule a specific time each day to do so.  If you forget one dose, do not take two doses together the next time.

 How Does Lamisil Work?

One of the main things that makes Lamisil tablets different from most other medications for toe nail fungus is that it works in the blood stream.  It's not a cream that you put onto the site of the infection, nor is it a home remedy.  It targets the infection through the blood stream and attacks the problem at the source.  Since 1996, more than 17 million people have used Lamisil tablets for toe nail fungus.

Are There Side Effects and Problems?

There are some minor side effects to Lamisil tablets, and some people might not be eligible to take this medicine.  Side effects may include diarrhea, headaches, indigestion and a rash.  Patients with Lupus can not take Lamisil, and these tablets are also not recommended for those with liver disease or kidney problems.  In rare instances, Lamisil tablets have caused very bad skin reactions.  Some patients have reported eye problems, including changes in their vision, while taking this medicine. If a patient has an allergic reaction to Lamisil, then they certainly shouldn't take this medicine again.

Lamisil has not yet been tested for children, so they should not be given this medicine.  Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also not take Lamisil.  Doctors have not yet proven that Lamisil is safe for pregnant women, and they have found that it does enter the breast milk for those who are nursing.

Lamisil is a powerful drug that works well for many people at attacking nail fungus.  It's one of the leading nail fungus treatments today.  Become an educated consumer and find out, from your doctor, if this treatment is the right one for your particular problem.
